Product description Jack DeJohnette took over the drum chair of the Miles Davis's group in 1969, when Tony Williams left it. In less than a year Miles had made 'Bitches Brew' and the Tony Williams' Lifetime, 'Emergency!' and the course of jazz was radically re-directed. The organ/guitar/drums line-up of Trio Beyond echoes that of Lifetime, the pioneering band that featured Larry Young, John McLaughlin and Tony Williams and helped to usher in the age of electric jazz and jazz-rock. Trio Beyond plays some of Lifetime's old repertoire: "Emergency", "Spectrum", "Big Nick" and "Allah Be Praised." The group also looks at some of the material Williams played in his years with Miles Davis - "Seven Steps To Heaven", "I Fall In Love Too Easily" and "Pee Wee" - and retranslates these tunes into the sonic language of electric jazz, with much whirlwind interplay between the musicians. The programme is topped up with group improvisations, a Larry Goldings tune and Joe Henderson's "If". This is the sound of three exceptionally gifted musicians, Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield and Larry Goldings revisiting an historical era that was of great importance in their own development - the era in which jazz and rock dovetailed - and celebrating the life and music of Tony Williams, one of the prime movers of the electric jazz movement. On 'Saudades' they are also fired up and inspired by the evident enthusiasm of the capacity audience in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at 2004's London Jazz Festival. Chicago born master drummer Jack DeJohnette has played on over 60 ECM albums and worked with everybody of significance in the history of modern jazz including John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Keith Jarrett, Chet Baker, Herbie Hancock and more. For more than 20 years, he has been a member of "The Standards Trio". Personnel: Jack DeJohnette - drums, John Scofield - guitar, Larry Goldings - Hammond organ, electric piano, sampler. Amazon.com With the exception of Miles Davis's Bitches Brew, Tony Williams's group Lifetime--the pioneering late '60s trio featuring organist Larry Young, and guitarist John McLauglin--wrote the book on jazz-rock fusion. This 2004 London concert features two former Miles sidemen as well as Jack DeJohnette, John Scofield, and Larry Goldings, who was contacted by Williams to join his band before his untimely death in 1997. It brilliantly updates music from Lifetime's seminal recordings Emergency! and Turn it Over. DeJohnette succeeded Williams in Davis's band, and his articulated drumming drives Scofield's blues-trenched, Hendrixian guitar licks and Goldings's evocative organ voicings, electric piano, and digital sampling. Their rewiring of the combustible blues "If," the spacey ballad "As One," and the rock-out numbers "Spectrum" and "Emergency" shows that this music is as durable as it is dynamic. The cooperatively composed title track further highlights Williams's never-ending influence and the exceptional improvisational acumen of these musicians. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
